From the opening track to the last, Shocky Shay wastes no time proving she’s No Joke—making it loud, clear, and unmistakable: she’s got something to say, and you’re gonna hear every word of it.
The album’s lead track, “Pass The Salt-N-Pepper,” is an unexpectedly sharp diss aimed at the reigning queens of the time, Salt-N-Pepa. For listeners today, it might come as a surprise, but Shay doesn’t flinch. She gives credit where it’s due, acknowledging the duo’s current reign—then confidently claims they’re just keeping the throne warm for her.
Although a diss record may have grabbed your attention, it’s songs like “Free Style,” “Ya Man’s Alright,” and “Slip It On”—a PSA on the importance of safe sex—that holds it. You might’ve come for the diss, but Shocky Shay makes sure you leave with much more. She’s not just attitude—she’s got range, sharp wit, and something real to say.
The album has its flaws—some of which can be chalked up to the era, but none of them overshadow the fact that Shay could spit harder than most of the dudes in the room. No Joke might not be a classic, but it was certainly a solid introduction.
